Ferromanganese (FeMn) is an iron and manganese alloy used to add manganese during steel production. The right grade depends on the steelmaker’s target chemistry and process, especially the allowable carbon level. Buyers should specify the required composition and delivery terms before requesting an offer.
Why steelmakers use ferromanganese
Manganese contributes to steelmaking as a deoxidizer, helps manage sulfur, and remains an important alloying element in many steels. Ferromanganese provides manganese in alloy form. Its use and addition rate depend on the steel grade and the rest of the charge.
High, medium and low carbon grades
Ferromanganese is commonly discussed in high carbon (HC), medium carbon (MC), and low carbon (LC) grades. These labels help identify the carbon range, but exact limits and the permitted levels of phosphorus, sulfur and silicon vary by specification. A buyer should use agreed numerical limits rather than a grade name alone.
Buyer checklist
- State the minimum manganese content and maximum carbon, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon levels.
- Define lump size, allowable fines, packaging and any handling constraints.
- Request a recent lot-specific certificate of analysis and agree on sampling and inspection.
- Confirm quantity, delivery schedule, destination and applicable Incoterms.
- Check whether your process requires a particular carbon grade or an alternative manganese addition.
Ferromanganese or silicomanganese?
Silicomanganese contributes both manganese and silicon, while ferromanganese is selected primarily for manganese addition. They should not be treated as direct mass-for-mass substitutes: compare the manganese, silicon and carbon contributions against the steel recipe.
Discuss a requirement
VELTRIX GLOBAL SYSTEMS is based in Madrid, Spain, and works with buyers in Europe and worldwide. Send your requested FeMn chemistry, size, volume and destination to info@veltrixgs.com so we can discuss the next steps. See our contact and office details.
