A manganese ore inquiry becomes useful when the buyer states what the material must do, how it will be measured and where it must be delivered. “Manganese ore, 40% Mn” alone leaves too many questions open. This checklist helps industrial buyers prepare a clearer request for quotation (RFQ).
1. Define the intended use and product form
State whether the material is for ferroalloy production, blending, beneficiation or another process. Specify natural ore or concentrate, and whether you seek lumps, fines or a defined size range. The same headline Mn grade can refer to very different products; acceptable chemistry and sizing depend on the buyer’s process.
2. Set the analytical requirements
Ask for a recent, representative certificate of analysis and list the elements or oxides relevant to your plant. A practical starting list is:
- Total Mn, with the reporting basis stated clearly (dry basis or as received).
- Fe, SiO₂ and Al₂O₃, plus CaO and MgO when they matter to the process.
- P and S, with maximum limits where the downstream process requires them.
- Any plant-specific trace elements, to be agreed rather than assumed.
Do not treat a generic number as a universal acceptance limit. Agree the specification, test method, tolerances and consequences of out-of-spec results in the contract. ISO 4298:2022 describes a potentiometric method for manganese determination in ores and concentrates within its stated scope.
3. Describe sizing and moisture
Give the target size distribution, maximum oversize and permitted fines as percentages, and define the test sieves. ISO 6230:1989 covers determination of manganese ore size distribution by sieving and notes that producer and consumer should agree the detailed method when comparing results. State a moisture limit and whether shipment weight, payable weight or both are assessed on a dry basis. ISO 4299:1989 addresses moisture determination at dispatch or acceptance.
4. Agree how a lot is sampled
A certificate is only as useful as its sampling protocol. Define the lot, where samples are taken, who witnesses sampling, how increments are combined and prepared, which laboratory is used, and how sealed reference samples and disputes are handled. ISO 4296-1:1984 addresses increment sampling at dispatch and acceptance; ISO 4296-2:1983 covers sample preparation. Put the agreed procedure in the purchase terms rather than relying on a single photograph or an unverified assay.
5. Include the commercial and delivery facts
- Trial and recurring quantity, delivery schedule and packaging or bulk form.
- Origin and available supporting documents.
- Destination, delivery point and proposed trade terms.
- Required inspection, laboratory, weight and shipping documents.
- Any permit, customs or compliance requirement specific to the route, to be checked for the transaction.
A short RFQ you can adapt
Quality: total Mn [target/minimum, basis]; Fe, SiO₂, Al₂O₃, P and S [limits]; other parameters [if needed].
Physical: size distribution [range and permitted fines]; moisture [maximum and basis].
Quantity: [trial and monthly volume]; destination: [place]; delivery: [timing and proposed terms].
Evidence: recent representative analysis, sampling method, origin and available inspection documents.
Use the checklist to open a technical discussion, then tailor the specification to your plant. For background, see our manganese ore guide and related guides to silicomanganese and ferromanganese.
